This is post-punk at its finest ladies and gents. Plenty of rock, punk, and experimentation rolled together, with odd vocals to top it off. The vocals are probably the only part I could see people having a problem with, but really, everyone should check this out.

Andrew Hill - Point of Departure

Holy shit, you guys see that line-up? Yeah this is one of those monster gatherings of musicians.

Released in '64, this record has Andrew Hill at his prime, deconstructing the post-bop idiom to suit his own avant-garde leanings. The great Tony Williams was still early in his career then, but of course, playing with the confidence of a seasoned veteran, working with Richard Davis on bass extremely well. On top of that, we have the triple-threat horn section of Henderson, Dolphy and Dorham. Man, what a great combination of different styles.

This is perfect for anyone who is yet to experience anything slightly left-of-centre in their jazz, as it's still very accessible, but extremely intriguing. Essential to anyones collection.

Geto Boys - The Geto Boys

Essentially, this 1990 album is a re-release and revamping of their '89 album Grip It! On That Other Level, also containing tracks from Making Trouble. They got picked up by Rick Rubin, re-recorded most of those tracks, and released it on Def American.

This is the perfect showcase of Geto Boys' collective talents, with great smooth beats, and lyrics that would make Odd Future fans cream their pants. Essential stuff for anybody into the more hardcore/gangsta side of hip hop (should be all of you bitches).

Scarface - Mr. Scarface Is Back

Part of the great early southern crew Geto Boys (who I'll probably post something from in the near future), Scarface had his solo debut in '91 with this gem. Pretty funky stuff, with a bit of the west coast flavour in both the beats and gangsta styling. Some of the samples are just fucking great too.

Strange that he's not really that well known, seeing as this is a really good debut, and he was a part of a solid crew; though I guess they were overlooked too. Also, he did the whole dying on the last track thing a few years before biggie did it.

Hatred Surge / Insect Warfare - Spilt

Ok so, you should know these two bands. At the very least, you should know Insect Warfare. Hatred Surge, funnily enough, was started by ex-bassist Alex Hughes from Insect Warfare.

Needless to say, both bands rule. And what happens when they get together?

Face = grinded.

Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True and This Year's Model

Elvis Costello, in all his angry, nerdy and literate glory may not look like much, but he's probably one of the most talented songwriters who ever lived.

These two are from his earlier days. They are both phenomenal works of in the pub rock/punk vein. I prefer This Year's Model but they're both so good you'll want them both

Alison is one of the most gorgeous and superbly written (from a lyrical perspective especially) songs ever.

The Pop Group - Y

Very interesting band. The Pop Group mix funk, dub, and even jazz into their mashed up post-punk sound, and somehow, pull it off. There's something about post-punk bands and experimentation that go so well together, and this is a great example.

Worth checking out if you like music at all.

Released a cassette in '09 which was pretty cool, but I prefer this, which came out a short time ago.

Felix Mendelssohn and Max Bruch - 2 Violin Concertos

These are two of the most important violin concertos around. Both are of romantic period sound, although Mendelssohn was much earlier than Bruch. Mendelssohn's is in E Minor and is considered essential in a violinist's repertoire. Bruch's is similarly noted. If you haven't listened to much Romantic music then this is a great place to start.

Cruciform - Atavism

Death/doom from Australia.

Though not as filthy and deranged as some of Australia's more recent output, and not as great as the seminal diSEMBOWELMENT album, Transcendence into The Peripheral, Cruciform still put out great quality material. Unfortunately, this album and a later demo were all they released, but quality over quantity is always a good thing.

Just another awesome album to add to the strong reputation of Australia's underground history.
