UNKLE - Psyence Fiction
James Lavelle has worked with various partners throughout UNKLE's lifetime, which probably explains the gradual change in style through the years. In the beginning, UNKLE was much more of a straight-ahead trip hop project, and for the debut, Psyence Fiction, Lavelle was teamed up with arguably the best in the business; Josh Davis, aka DJ Shadow.
If you dig any of the 90's trip hop, it's safe to say you will enjoy this. Both men obviously know what they are doing, and the large amount of guest vocalists/MCs actually work particularly well.

Portishead - Roseland NYC Live
Portishead absolutely kill it live on this release. It's arguably more moving than any of their studio recordings and is definitely aided by the inclusion of an orchestra, though it's Beth that really takes the metaphorical cake, she's incredible on here. If you call yourself a Portishead fan and don't have this already, get it asap.P.S. I'm back, did you miss me? Nope? Yeah, fuck you too. I have nothing to do until October now so expect more posts from me. Joy!

Teargas & Plateglass
Lost my shit listening to this stoned. Think industrialised down-tempo trip hop beats, with a droning backdrop closer to dark ambient, and dark orchestral touches here and there with eerie vocals making an appearance too.
Absolutely engrossing.

Hey there ladies and gents
Hey guys. I thought of a few ways to say hi, then I decided on a simple one: a story.
Here's a tale for all of you who have ever been in reach of a wonderful girl only to realize she's cut off your hands.
If you don't give a shit, feel free to skip to the bottom for good music.
Me and this girl have been friends for about 2 years. We've always gotten along great, but for no real good reason, we hadn't maintained very good contact. I'd met her through a mutual friend who once helped me out of a tight spot (physically, booya), and at the time this girl (the first one) had a longstanding failing relationship with a guy. This girl is perfect, just perfect. I mean, just think of the exact girl you'd always want to be with: this is her, for me.
I hung out with her a few times about a year-ish later, when she was just out of aforementioned relationship and was starting to see a new guy. I don't know if you guys know the feeling, but man, this girl just made being myself so easy.
Regardless, we fall out of contact again. She gets in another failing (though not violently bad) relationship with the new guy. A year passes. We start talking again. We make spur of the moment plans to hang out, and end up spending the entire night together. This was after a conversation where I confessed I liked her quite a bit and she said the tired song about 'well, I don't know if I feel that way about you'. She admitted, however, that her opinions might have been biased based on the fact that, when she met with me previously, she was already in a relationship.
To cut it short, the night went perfectly. We ended up at her place, watching one of my favorite movies (Memento, watch it immediately), and, with her permission (this is key), we kissed. I thought things went great, though of course, I sensed things maybe didn't go as well as they could have.
The next day, I got perhaps the most insultingly unsatisfying rejection text (yes, a TEXT) on my phone. Friend zoned. Now, man, the weird fucking thing about this is she even admits being attractive to me. I don't get it. What fucking more could there even be? What do you do when you're so close to what you want and it's still so far away?
So, I said to myself...
I guess... fuck bitches; get money.
Here's an album I've been digging for awhile. Good ass trip hop. Beautiful vocals, good beats. Some nice jazz influences. Mostly instrumental, but the songs that aren't are eerily good. Maybe it's been posted before. Whatever. If it has, Dom will yell at me and I'll fix it. Night ya'll

Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer
An incredibly diverse release from Gonjasufi on Warp Records, featuring Gaslamp Killer on production duties (and also FlyLo on a couple of tracks).
Psychedelic, lo-fi, electronica, hip-hop, soul... the tags are endless, all (kind of) coming together into a stoned haze of gritty vocals and eclectic production.

Kosheen - Resist
Trip Hop-cum-Drum n Bass group from the undisputed home of the genre: Bristol.
Music rules extremely hard like most trip hop, and the way drum and bass is added to the flavour makes for a very interesting listen.

Tricky - Maxinquaye+a bonus

One of the biggest names in trip-hop and father of probably the best trip hop album ever (or second best, depending on how you feel about Massive Attack's Mezzanine.) Tricky's smoky voice projects his amalgam of rapping and singing over a layer of dark, opressive and beautiful electronic sounds. Among others, Tricky samples Isaac Hayes (the same sample can be heard on Portishead's song "Glory Box"), the Smashing Pumpkins, Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye. They all work, too. Obviously. It's too bad he had to start with this album, really, because he's never going to do anything that surpasses it.
Trust me on this one: you NEED this album. It will make your life better.
Also, have his latest one, Mixed Race, as well. It rules too.

Dirty Elegance - Finding Beauty in the Wretched

Ever watch a thunderstorm? I remember back when I was young, my grandpa and I would sit in our favorite chairs on the screened in porch and watch as the rain and lightning filled our senses with calmness and clarity. We would sometimes throw a nerf ball around, sometimes just talk, and sometimes just watch. My grandpa is gone now but as I reflect on our time together I realize how freaking cool storms are.
